What to drink at New Year!

While writing my previous blog, great places to go after work in Brighton, it got me thinking about my life prior to estate agency which was cocktail waitering. It was a job I loved (except for the hours!) and I worked in some great, small independent cocktail bars. Over the time I worked as a cocktail waiter I enjoyed making many different drinks and found it interesting how everyone seemed to always have their own favourite. Very rarely would you get an order of the same drink, if you were serving a group of 6 you would normally have an order for 6 different drinks which made the job a lot more interesting and kept it very varied. As we get closer to the party season I thought I would chat to the Move Revolution gang to get their thoughts about what cocktails or drinks they will be having on New Year’s Eve. A selection of their choices are below, along with the recipes so you can make them, along with some little cocktail waiter tweaks of my own.

Beer!

I thought the best place to start would be in my own office with Joey, my right hand man down here in Brighton. Unfortunately, it turns out Joey isn’t a huge fan of cocktails and tends to enjoy beer a lot more. So we had a chat about that as I learned a fair bit about good beers too. As he enjoys ales more than lagers we tried to find something good for the winter. He has always been a fan of Harvey’s Sussex which is a locally brewed beer to us in Brighton as Harvey’s brewery is in Lewes. A lot of the local pubs in Brighton tend to sell Sussex and it is recognised throughout the south as a good well brewed ale. I have recommended to Joey that next time he is in the mood for a beer that he should try Harvey’s “Winter Warmer” beer called Harvey’s Old Ale which is only available from October throughout the winter months. It is a soft, nutty beer that is perfect to enjoy sat in front of an open fire in many of Brighton’s brilliant local pubs.

Martini

After Speaking with Joey I caught up with our Head of Marketing, Nici. She was telling me that on NYE she really enjoys a martini. A martini is a very old traditional cocktail made with dry vermouth and gin, however over the years, various cocktail waiters have put their own twist on this old favourite and for Nici I knew she was a lover of coffee so I suggested she try an Espresso Martini. This is a very simple cocktail to make you will need:

50ml of good vodka (whichever is your favourite)
25ml of Tia Maria or Kahula (coffee based liquor)
20ml Sugar Syrup (vanilla or caramel flavoured syrup also works well)
15ml of espresso
1 Tsp of Hot chocolate powder or cocoa powder
3 coffee beans

First of all, mix the hot chocolate powder in with the espresso, then fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the Vodka, Tia Maria, sugar syrup and espresso mix, then shake for 30 seconds and pour through a small strainer into a martini glass. Decorate by placing the three coffee beans in the middle.

This is a great cocktail to get the night started as it will give a little extra lift from the caffeine in the espresso, not one to be drinking too many of though as it is very sweet and can be very rich. Why not make your own at your New Year’s Eve party? I think Nici might be trying to persuade me to make her this one!

Mojito

I had the same conversation with Mathew, our Area Sales Manager for the Haywards Heath area. Mathew’s favourite is another classic called a “Mojito” which descends from Cuba and is made with rum and mint.

To make this cocktail you will need:
50ml of golden rum (traditionally Havana Club)
6/8 mint leaves
4/6 wedges of lime
2 tsp of sugar
Soda water
Crushed Ice

First add the mint leaves and the sugar to a tall glass and using a muddler (or rolling pin) bash the mint and the sugar. Next squeeze in the juice from the lime wedges and then add them to the glass. Next, half fill the glass with crushed ice and add the rum, using a long spoon stir the mixture together for 30 seconds, then top up with soda water and finish with some more crushed ice and some mint leaves to decorate.

As a variation on this classic I have suggested that Mathew asks for a Strawberry Mojito which is made in the same way, however instead of using limes you add strawberries which helps makes it a little sweeter.

Smokey Bramble

At our recent Christmas party, I was speaking with Ryan, our sales negotiator in our Croydon branch and discovered his favourite is a cocktail called a Smokey Bramble. Not a commonly known drink as we found when we approached the bar to order one, I had to explain to the bar staff how to make it. It is really simple and you will need:

50ml of “Smokey” Scotch (Monkey Shoulder Scotch is a good choice)
25ml of cherry liquor
1 tsp of sugar syrup
A squeeze of lemon juice
Crushed ice

Fill a tumbler style glass two thirds full of crushed ice, add the scotch, sugar syrup and lemon juice and carefully stir with a spoon. Once this has been fully mixed, top up with crushed ice so that there is a small peak of ice above the rim of the glass and then slowly pour the cherry liquor over the ice so that is sits on top of the rest of the cocktail.

This is a great cocktail as an introduction to scotch as it gives a sweet twist on the old very popular liquor.

Cointreau Fizz

One of the other staff members who had noticed me getting Ryan a different drink was Hannah, our Lettings Manager and she asked me if I could come up with a new drink for her to try. Hannah is a big fan of champagne and wondered if I could come up with a cocktail that would make it a little more interesting. I gave it some thought and suggested she tried a Cointreau Fizz. To make this, you will need:

50ml of Cointreau
A fresh passionfruit
Lime juice
Agave syrup
Good champagne to top
Crushed ice

Start by emptying the inside of the passionfruit into a tall glass then fill the glass two thirds full with crushed ice and add the Cointreau, lime juice and syrup and give all this a good stir. Once mixed add a little more crushed ice to the top of the glass and pour over the champagne.

This is a great fruity cocktail made all the more special by adding the champagne, luckily for me Hannah really enjoyed it and recommended it to a few of the others!

English Fizz

Having spoken to the other members of staff about their favourite cocktails I started to get thinking about mine and what I would pick if someone was making them for me. As you can imagine I have tried hundreds of different ones over the years but my favourite is definitely gin based and would have to be an English Fizz. To make this one you will need:

50ml Good Gin (I personally like Hendricks)
25ml Elderflower liquor
1 Tsp Cucumber syrup
4/6 mint leaves
Lemon juice
Soda Water
Crushed Ice

First thing to do is clap and rub the mint leaves between your hands, then put them into a tall tumbler glass and add lots of crushed ice. Add the Gin, Elderflower liquor, cucumber syrup and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker with some cubed ice and shake for 30 seconds. Then pour over the mint and ice, top up with soda water and garnish with a mint sprig and a cucumber twist. PERFECT.

So there are just a few different ideas for cocktails at NYE or anytime really, there are so many different ones to try but the best ones of all are the ones you create yourself so why not grab a few different liquors some different fruits and try mixing your own. Do share with us if you make some delicious creations!

Zac Ship, Area Sales Manager for our Tunbridge Wells Office favourite pub has royal connections – it is the King Henry VIII which is opposite Hever Castle. Zac grew up there as a child and attended the local primary school; he has been to the castle many many times. It offers beautiful walks around the grounds, which look especially pretty this time of the year as Christmas looms. Afterwards he recommends that you head over to The King Henry pub to enjoy a glass of mulled wine by the roaring fire – you can’t beat it! The food is also to die for with the pork belly being Zac’s personal favourite!

Festive Gingerbread Houses

We absolutely love gingerbread houses, as you may have gathered from our post about the Gingerbread colouring competitions with Reigate Parish and The Meads! We confess we don’t always manage to make the most perfect Pinterest worthy ones but we do love the process, and it never fails to get us feeling festive. Speaking of Pinterest, we have been collecting some lovely ideas to share with you. Our favourites are the Gingerbread Tipi and the house with the sprinkle covered roof. Such fun! We are thinking it might be a good activity to do in the few days after the children break up for Christmas – got to love some kitchen crafting!

Christmas Wreaths – just a few ideas

Welcome visitors to your home with a beautiful wreath this Christmas! There are so many designs and styles to choose from we have created a Pinterest board to help you work out which wreath is perfect for your home! You can click the image below to be taken to our ideas board, but before you do, have a look at the highlights underneath it!

screen-shot-2016-12-12-at-19-46-30

Just to give few quick ideas…

A traditional wreath packed with the scent of Christmas – cinnamon sticks and oranges mixed amongst blue spruce and pine cones.

traditional-wreath

Simple Stylish Scented Green Wreath – if you aren’t keen on a glitzy wreath… you will probably love the pared back simplicity of blue spruce combined with aromatic eucalyptus and rosemary.

simplestylishgreen

Luxury Fresh Floral Wreath – there is often the misconception that fresh flowers won’t last in a Christmas wreath, however with cold winter air and topping up of water (in an oasis wreath) the flowers will last a very long time.  This wreath has beautiful antique colour roses, as well as sage and eucalyptus – it will have the most amazing aroma!

floralwreath

We just love this idea… An Alpine Village Christmas Wreath. Imagine the fun having this hanging on your front door! This could be easily achieved with a pre-made green wreath, Christmas mini houses and bottle brush trees ‘wired’ to the wreath!

alpinevillagewreath

And now for a wreath that won’t go on your front door… but was too yummy looking not to include! We know this would be loved by everyone … who can resist a warm cinnamon roll – perhaps with a glass of mulled wine.

We hope this give you lots of inspiration; our Pinterest board is packed with even more ideas! Please send us any photographs of your amazing wreaths – email Nicola.jordan@moverevolution.com

We’ve loved running these Gingerbread House competitions with our schools!

We have had a brilliant time running competitions for Gingerbread House colouring and design at The Meads School in East Grinstead and Reigate Parish Church Primary School. The effort the children had put into their designs really shone through and it was wonderful looking at them all, although very tough to choose winners!

We loved going along to their Christmas Fair and presenting the prizes which were beautiful Gingerbread House Christmas decorations, make your own gingerbread kits and a beautiful Gingerbread baking book. We are looking forward to more competitions and events with both schools and to continuing to help the PTA’s with their fundraising for 2017.

Here are some images from Reigate Parish Church School where the team were on hand at the weekend to help out at the Christmas Fair and hand out the prizes to the children. Look at the stunning designs below!

Boxpark Croydon – we love it!

Eating isn’t a new concept. We all know about eating, we’re lucky enough to do it every day! It’s second nature to us, right? Well, I thought that for a long while too. There’s more to eating than abating the feeling of hunger. Food means different things all around the world. Let me bring you on a short journey.
I was very fortunate in a previous career. I worked abroad frequently. I found myself in North Africa, South America, Asia, and all over Europe. I would drag our team to a local restaurant or ask to eat and drink with our local colleagues rather than stay in for another club sandwich and generic beer at the hotel. We ate great, great things. Tenderloin and Malbec in Buenos Aires, Tagine in Marrakech, Tacos and Tequila in Mexico City, Pork Knuckles and white beer in Venice. I was very fortunate and food was what I was into. The experience as much as the taste. The amount of great conversations had, and bonds made over food was unreal. Food was something of an equaliser. A team from all over the world, who had eaten together the night before seemed to gel better and work stronger the following day. I loved that.

Fast forward some years. I moved on from that career in graphics to focus on my Photography. I live in Greenwich now, home to giant round tents, replica boats turned into overpriced museums and overcrowded markets. The very market which has kept me ticking over on the food front. There’s always a new stall popping up selling something I’ve not seen or heard of before. I’m also lucky to have a farmers market near me on Saturdays which has local produce and extravagantly decorated food trucks that visit. My window to all that amazing street food, right there on my doorstop, every weekend.

London was seeing a drive of new social eating and drinking experiences popping up. Incredible food trucks, evening street food markets like Street Feast and KERB. Not forgetting the forward thinking Boxpark Shoreditch. A site formed of shipping containers which housed, in the early days, anything from restaurants and fast food, to clothing retailers, experiential marketing and I believe, even hot – desking offices.

It’s Boxpark who are the reason for this blog quite frankly. Croydon was chosen by them to open up a second site, and I’m very lucky that it’s in one of the regions that Move Revolution cover. So, it’s only right that some of our food loving staff pay them a visit, Isn’t it?

boxpark-9

One late afternoon, I invited Paul and Ryan, our Caribbean food loving Croydon team, up to Boxpark to meet Jack and myself. The venue itself sits directly adjacent to East Croydon station. So entirely accessible by anyone not familiar with their way around town. It’s also perfect for people meeting up after work for a bite to eat, or a drink. Before heading back home. I can imagine the place is popular with the lunchtime crowd too. With so many vendors offering a huge variety of foods, you shouldn’t ever get bored!

boxpark-17

Once we’d all met up, we had a quick look around to take in the view. It’s quite the spectacle actually. With the industrial harshness of the shipping containers, softened and modernised with the sleek black paint, wood planked upper level gangways and atmospheric neon and spot lighting, the place comes into its own as the sun goes down. The frontage of each vendor emitting a welcoming glow. And, welcoming is exactly what they were! The vendors we spoke to were chatty and enthusiastic about their food. That’s a great sign for me.

boxpark-8

Ryan was first to dive in, he’d found himself a great little place called Fish, Wings & Tings. These folks have a long standing and ridiculously popular outlet in Brixton Village. The team definitely know a thing or two about their Caribbean food, and their following is well earned. Ryan ordered their Reggae Wings which looked so good, that I couldn’t help snatching his last one. You can tell the chef here likes to keep things authentic. There’s no jarred or mass produced generic jerk sauces being used here. The additional topping of some chopped pineapple added that great contrasting sweetness to go with the heat and sour in the sauce. Perfect, and definitely a welcome addition to not only the Boxpark, but to Croydon itself. Bad, lazily Jerk chicken will put you off Caribbean food for life.

img_7825

We didn’t venture too far next, directly next door was a Beijing Street food kitchen called Mama Lan’s
These guys also have a plot in the popular Brixton Village, but can also be found up in East London.

Paul picked out a portion of pulled pork steamed buns. Paul’s initial feedback wasn’t much more than some satisfied grunts and “oh my god’s. That’s always a good sign. Eventually he let out that the pork just melted away in his mouth and had made him re-think what good Chinese food even is! This is nothing like your local takeaway.

boxpark-5

As the evening went on we sampled 3 types of Bao from Bao Bao London. Authentic Taiwanese steamed buns from a very cosy little eatery accessed from the outside of Boxpark. They have a fuller menu inside, but offer the Bao and new trendy Bubble Teas from a takeaway counter near the entrance. Although having never been to Taiwan, I’ve latched onto these little white pillows of goodness at other street food venues over the years and these ones are definitely up there with the tastiest ones I’ve had. If you’re not familiar with Taiwanese food, then these are a great way in. Ingredients like pork belly, pulled lamb and fried chicken offer enough familiarity, that you’ll enjoy the marriage with these eastern flavours and textures. So, so good.

Next stop, Brazil. There’s an outlet called Carioca. Ryan couldn’t resist the Beef and Mozzarella Croquettes. These were comfort food at its best! Hot, crispy coated slow cooked beef that fell apart in your mouth to reveal a melted core of the famous soft cheese. Unreal. Carioca are another successful trader from Brixton. It’s always been the place to go, to sample Brazilian food outside of the typical BBQ places that pop up in chains around town. Warming Feijoada and Caipira are two must tries if you’re after a heartier meal. Don’t forget to grab a Caipirinha to finish off the experience.

img_7821

I’d heard and seen a fair bit on social media about the guys at Coqfighter, even before we visited. So even though my already full stomach was putting up some resistance, I just HAD to try their Korean fried chicken burger. No mistakes were made. This was hands down, the best chicken burger I’d ever eaten. I’d even rate it up there in the top handful of burgers I’d ever eaten! Succulent chicken thigh meat in the crispiest panic coating I’ve come across. A great start to any chicken burger already but with their pickled red onion, Sambal mayo and Korean hot sauce, this was the ultimate combination. If it wasn’t for their other enticing items on the menu, I’d be straight back for another! The guys at Coqfighter definitely have the right mindset for this type of eating. The whole menu is geared up for casual eating and they offer a small but eclectic selection of craft beers. If I wasn’t driving, I’d have happily plotted up for the evening.

boxpark-7

Somehow, and I think the incredible choice and magnetic attraction of each of the frontages is to blame, we still wanted more. Something sweet is what we fancied. To be honest these next purchases were almost made with guilt in mind. Our impulsive trip out for food disrupted lots of dinner plans with family and partners. So, what better way to apologise than to bring home doughnuts and Cronuts from Dum Dum’s Donutterie! I swung by the place twice during our visit. Once to buy some of the delectables and once more because I was so caught up with staring at the bulging pastry circles from heaven, that I forgot to even take any photographs! Luckily Jack was on hand to keep his wits about him and keep snapping away.

img_7833

I’ve been given strict instructions from colleagues and my partner to never to visit BoxPark again. That is, without bringing them with me, or without bringing back all the food!

img_7841

If you’re in the area, or thinking of moving to the area. BoxPark is a gift, and one which you should take full advantage of. It’s a perfect socialising alternative to the pubs and bars that, if you’re like me, are growing a little weary of. It’s also, in its own right, an amazing place to try for lunch or dinner with friends or partners. What’s that? What about breakfast you say? Well sure! If you’ve time to spare before heading off from East Croydon station and you want to stop for a little breakfast, or a lazy brunch at the weekend, did I mention that BoxPark is also home to a branch of the famous Breakfast Club? Like its sister venues, this one is decked out like the warehouse apartment you always wanted. With a cool, buzzy vibe. They do great hot drinks and all the brunch favourites, but done very, very well.

You literally have no excuses not to go. See you there!
