Summer holidays – whistle stop list of ideas

Can you believe the summer holidays are upon us? Where has the year gone… we’re the same every year, it suddenly gets to this point and bam, here we are! To help inspire days out, this is a whistle stop tour of the places we’ve filed away to visit at some point during the next few weeks. Some are old favourites and some are new discoveries….

National Trust places – the membership cards will be well used as we visit our favourites: Polesden Lacey, Chartwell, Nymans, Standen, Petworth, Bodiam Castle and Emmetts Garden. Perfect places to spend a couple of hours to a whole day. Pick up a packed lunch and meet friends, we absolutely love spending time in all of these places!

Hever Castle jousting tournaments are taking place during most weekends over the summer holidays, the children will love seeing real life knights on their horses!

The Look Out Discovery Centre at Bracknell has a Dino Show on until September as well as the hands on science exhibition and play areas so a day can easily be spent here!

Wakehurst – Wild Kids which has a weekly schedule of activities so you can visit multiple times and experience different things. From climbing trees to woodland potions, it sounds great.

Narnia Walk at Banstead Woods which brings beautiful wooden sculpted figures to this lovely area to walk in.

Gatwick Aviation Museum with the chance to see planes close up and even view the large ones from the main airport from the viewing point – super fun for children!

The beach! We love Brighton, Littlehampton, Ferring, Dymchurch, Margate, Birchington and Camber Sands

Denbies – loads of different things to do! Crafts, Teddy Bear nature trail train ride, Punch and Judy, Disco to name a few!

The local wildlife trusts have plenty to do over the summer in all our areas:

Surrey Wildlife Trust – forest school inspired adventures, wild tots, explorers and mini beasts and microscopes

Sussex Wildlife Trust – several family focused events, including Undersea Adventures, Rockpool Ramblers and Minibeasts

Kent Wildlife Trust – mini beasts, campfires and crafts, ponds and prints, rock pooling and Stick Man. Heaps of choice for fun with the children!

Thomas the Tank Engine at Tenterden – for all the young train spotters out there!

Kew Gardens Science Festival for games, interactive experiments and talks for budding scientists. We love Kew, it’s such a stunning place to visit.

Stanmer House – Country House Festival with a fairy hollow story area, marquee with rainy day activities, kids yoga, pottery and painting.

Trails and Tales at Gatton Park, Wednesdays and Fridays in the summer hols, where the outdoor adventure centres around a book, creating things linked to the story. The beautiful backdrop makes this a great place to spend an hour or so.

Dinosaur Island Play area, Southwater – a brilliant themed playground with the benefit of a nearby lake to splash in when things get too hot!

Tilgate Park – picnic and visit the animals – we especially love the meerkats!

Wilderness Wood, Hadlow Down, East Sussex – camping, walks, beautiful countryside!

We hope this list offers you some ideas so you can get planning for the next few weeks with the children. If you have some cracking places to suggest that we’ve not featured here, please let us know, we’d love to see them.

Most of all, have a fantastic summer!
